Currently Reading March 14, 2017

I must admit, I felt nervous about what to write for my first blog post on my brand-spanking new author website. Do I tell you, dear reader, about the novel I’m querying? Or the travails of editing with a coauthor? Or, do I tell you semi-intimate details about myself so it feels like we’re getting to know one another over a cup of coffee at the local cafe?

So many choices. So much pressure.

But if you’re here, then you’re either my dad or you like reading books. You could be a fellow writer, but you should still fall into the latter category. As Uncle Stevie said

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”

Steven King

Sharing what’s on my nightstand seemed like a good place to start.

Troublemaker by Leah Remini –  I finished it yesterday and was sad to chuck the book in the library return bin. It felt like I was tossing a friend. The book is about Leah Remini’s time in Scientology and Hollywood. If you liked her recent TV series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath then I suggest you read the book. It’s written in a very conversational way and I really enjoyed it.

The Lazarus Gate by Mark Latham – Victorian London is plagued by terrorist bombings and when our intrepid hero gets called into the service of a secretive society to catch the criminals things get weird in a delicious paranormal, alternate history kind of way. I’m a third of the way through and devouring it whenever I have a spare moment.

The Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher – I usually don’t read more than one or two books at a time, and usually then only if one is fiction and one is non-fiction. But, Jim Butcher’s book is so amazing that I have purposefully slowed down to savor it. Plot, pacing, characters: A+++. Writing: Superb! I’ve written several passages down in my journal as they are inspiring or thought-provoking. I’m two-thirds of the way through, and quite simply, I don’t want it to end.

So, there’s a peek into my bookshelves at the things I’m currently reading. Steampunk, alternate history, celebrity memoir. How about you? What are you currently reading?
